To many, it seems there isn’t a lot going on in the vineyard during the colder months. In reality, there is actually a lot happening in the background to keep our vines healthy and happy.
Our crew has worked hard to prune the entire 65 acres of vines that we currently have. When pruning vines, we remove up to 90% of last year’s growth, leaving only canes at the renewal zone for easy and consistent pruning year to year. Each step in the vineyard, we attempt to maximize efficiency and ease of the next step of canopy management. Balanced pruning is the first and most critical step in achieving annual yield targets, ensuring block uniformity, vine balance and long-term vine health while maximizing fruit quality.
Another large part of our winter season is spent planning for the summer months. We have determined where we are going to plant more vines this spring. New to the vineyard will be the addition of more Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. We have chosen to go self-rooted. This type of planting style is to help combat winter damage. For the first 2 years, the vines will be buried to protect them from winter’s harm.
2017 is already shaping up to be a prosperous and exciting year.
